Sector presentation

Morocco enjoys real potential due to its strategic position allowing it to put in place an energy vision that already giving positive results.

Choosing the sector of renewable energies was motivated by:

  • Eolian power potential estimated at 25,000MW, of which 6,000MW are achievable by 2030.
  • Solar power potential due to 3,000 hours of sun per year, and 5KWH/m2/day of solar radiation.
  • Significant hydraulic energy potential for the installation of hydraulic micro-stations: there are over 200 usable sites.
  • Important biomass potential.
  • Legal and institutional framework highly advantageous aiming at accelerating the projects set up in the sector of renewable energies.

  • Estimated total investment in the energy sector at 18.95 Billion USD by 2020 (about 156 Billion dirhams).

Solar energy plan

  • Total electric production capacity of 2,000MW by 2020.
  • 5 sites: Ouarzazate, Ait Bni Mathar, Foum El Oued, Boujdour et Sebkhat Tah.
  • 2 technologies: Concentrated Solar Power and photovoltaic
  • Increase the part of solar energy to 14% of the total electric capacity.
  • Saving of 1 million of Tonne of Oil Equivalent (TOE), and reduction of 3.7 millions of tons of CO2 per year.

Eolian energy plan

  • Increase the electric capacity from 280MW in 2010 to 2,000MW by 2020 (38% of actual capacity).
  • Estimated yearly production of 6,600GWH (26% of current national production).
  • 5 new sites: Sendouk (Tangier), Koudia Baida II (Tetouan), Taza, Tiskrad (Laayoune) and Boujdour.
  • Saving of 1.5 million of Tonne of Oil Equivalent (TOE), and reduction of 5.6 millions of tons of CO2 per year.

  • Reduction of 5.6 millions of tons of CO2 per year.
  • 5 new sites: Tangier2 (150MW), Koudia Baida II Tetouan (300MW), Taza (150MW), Tiskrad at Laayoune (300MW) and Boujdour (100MW).
  • Minimum capacity installed by 2020: 2,000MW
